The Foundation in Art and Design provides an essential introduction to the creative arts by introducing your explore and experiment with a wide range of medias. It is designed to maximise creative exploration through art and design based programme, which provides students with the opportunity to develop creative expression by learning an applied range of complementary art and design skills and processes.

In addition, this course will help students develop communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

This foundation sees guidance offered by our experienced faculty, helping you choose a specialist pathway that’s right for you. The course will give you the opportunity to explore a broad range of creative fields, developing skills and knowledge and preparing you for further educational and career-based opportunities in the worlds of art and design.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY?

Comprehensive introduction to art and design subject areas through studio workshops, seminars and lectures. Students will follow a programme of drawing, exploratory, mixed media to develop practical skills and research methods. Exploratory and pathway units will be consolidated to propose and implement a personal Final Major Project.

PROGRESSION

Previous foundation students have progressed to do a BA (Hons) degree, or on one occasion a BSc and a couple of MA’s. The following are some progression degree subjects: architecture, painting, sculpture, fine art, product design (rather than 3D design) curating, digital arts, film, and loose visual communication.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum age: 17
  • Typically one A-level, or equivalent level 3/EU/international qualifications (for example International
  • Baccalaureate Certificates)
  • Plus three GCSE passes (A*- C) (9 - 4) or level 2 qualification equivalent (preferably English language and an art & design subject)
  • English proficiency: IELTS 5.0 (with minimum 4.5 for each component) or equivalent (CEFR Level B2)
  • Entry to this course will also be determined by assessment of your portfolio of creative works, interview
  • and written statement
  • Alternative qualifications and experience may also betaken into consideration. In exceptional circumstances,a candidate may be considered without required
  • qualifications based on work experience and/or previous study/creative practice
NOTE: for progression to undergraduate level study,applicants will usually be required to have formal qualifications such as A-level and GCSEs or equivalent.
